From Hampton Park to Weber Road
Romeoville has two distinct housing eras, and concrete contractors here plan very different jobs for each. In 1950 the village had about 46 homes and 147 people. In 1957, more than 600 acres of wetlands along Route 53 became the Hampton Park subdivision, with another 400 acres added in 1964. Decades later, after the I-55 interchange at Weber Road opened in 1990, the Weber Road area became suburban, and Romeoville gained more than 25,000 residents over the 1990s and 2000s.
Hampton Park: wetland ground, older slabs
Hampton Park was built on wetland, and the homes are now more than 60 years old. Concrete on soft, wet ground tends to settle unevenly, and old slabs often lack the base and air entrainment that new work has. When we replace a driveway or patio here, we dig out soft material, bring in stone, compact it in layers and pour on a solid foundation. We also check how water drains across the lot, because wetland soil holds moisture.
Weber Road neighborhoods: young but aging
Homes built after 1990 near Weber Road now have concrete that is 15 to 35 years old. Typical issues are scaling from road salt, settled sections near the garage, and patios that are too small for how families use the yard. Many owners combine a driveway replacement with a larger stamped or broom-finished patio.
The Stone City
Romeoville's nickname comes from its limestone quarries. Limestone from Romeoville was used to build the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, unveiled in 1888. The village sits on the Gateway Wetlands directly west of the Des Plaines River, at about 630 feet. It was first settled in 1835 on Isle a la Cache, an island in the Des Plaines, and incorporated in 1895.
Choosing between repair and replacement
We usually recommend:
- Crack sealing when slabs are level and the surface is in good shape
- Section replacement when one or two panels have sunk or broken
- Full replacement when the base has failed, many panels are moving, or the surface is scaling across the slab
On Hampton Park's older ground, full replacement is often the honest answer. On newer homes, section replacement may be enough.

Reading the cracks
The pattern of cracking tells us a lot. Straight cracks along joints are normal. A crack that runs diagonally from a corner often means the slab is settling. A web of fine cracks on the surface usually points to a finishing or curing problem. Flaking means the surface is breaking down from freeze-thaw. We use these clues to decide whether repair will last or the slab needs to go.
Patios that fit the yard
Many Romeoville yards from the 1990s and 2000s are a good size but came with only a small slab. Before we pour a bigger patio, we look at where the sun falls in the evening, how far it is to the grill, and how people move between the door, the patio and the yard. The goal is a patio that actually gets used.

Romeoville Questions
Why do Hampton Park driveways settle so much?
The subdivision was built on wetland, and soft, wet soil compresses over time. We dig out soft material and compact a stone base before pouring a new driveway.
My Weber Road-area home is from the 2000s. Does the concrete need replacing?
Not always. Concrete that age often just needs crack sealing or a section replaced. We check the base and surface to see what makes sense.
Do I need a permit for a driveway in Romeoville?
Some projects need one. We check with the village before scheduling.
