A Railroad Town's Concrete Needs
West Chicago started as a railroad junction, and the way the town grew still shapes the work concrete contractors do here. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad reached the site in 1849, and in 1850 the Aurora Branch Railroad made it what Wikipedia calls America's first railroad junction point west of Chicago. The first plat, the Town of Junction, was recorded in 1855. The village incorporated as Turner in 1873 and took the name West Chicago in 1896.
Old blocks near the tracks
Homes near the original plats and downtown are among the oldest in this part of DuPage County. Their concrete often includes:
- Narrow driveways leading to detached garages at the back of the lot
- Garage floors that have cracked, sunk or broken at the door
- Front steps with uneven risers
- Walks that have heaved over time
On these lots, a new garage slab or a driveway replacement can make a big difference in day-to-day use. We look at how water moves from the street to the back of the lot, because long driveways on older lots often collect water at the garage door.
The growth years
West Chicago had 6,854 residents in 1960, 9,988 in 1970 and 14,796 in 1990. Then it grew 58.6 percent in the 1990s and another 15.4 percent in the 2000s, reaching 27,086 in 2010. The 2020 census counted 25,614 people and 7,801 housing units. Homes from the 1990s and 2000s now have concrete that is 15 to 35 years old. Typical requests from those streets are patio replacements, driveway aprons and stoops that have settled.
A big town by area
West Chicago covers about 15.7 square miles, with only about 496 housing units per square mile, so many lots are larger than in nearby suburbs. That opens the door to bigger patios, longer driveways and outbuildings that need slabs. DuPage Airport sits within the city, and part of the West Chicago Prairie, described as one of the largest and best preserved prairies in the Midwest, is protected at Truitt-Hoff Nature Preserve.
Our approach to a West Chicago estimate
1. Look at the whole lot. Where does water come from, and where should it go? 2. Check the existing concrete. Is the base soft? Did it crack along joints or randomly? 3. Decide on scope. Replace a few sections, or tear out and start over? 4. Confirm permits. We check whether the city needs a permit for your project. 5. Write it down. You get the scope, materials and price in writing.
Services that fit West Chicago
- Garage and shed slabs: detached garage floors and outbuilding pads on larger lots
- Concrete driveways: long driveways, replacements and aprons
- Concrete patios: new and larger patios
- Stamped concrete: decorative patios and walks
- Sidewalks and steps: front walks, stoops and steps with even risers
- Concrete repair and replacement: sunken or broken sections
Driveway aprons and the street
The apron, where the driveway meets the street, takes the most abuse: plows, salt and the weight of every car. On older West Chicago lots it is often the first part to fail. When we replace a driveway, we look closely at the apron and the curb cut and confirm whether any work in the public right-of-way needs city approval.

West Chicago Questions
Can you replace a detached garage floor on an older West Chicago lot?
Yes. We break out the old floor, rebuild and compact the base, and pour a new slab sloped toward the door so water does not pool inside.
Water collects at my garage door. What can be done?
Long driveways on older lots often slope toward the garage. We can regrade the driveway when we replace it, or add a trench drain if regrading is not possible.
Do you work in the newer subdivisions too?
Yes. We handle patio, driveway and stoop work for homes from the 1990s and 2000s as well as the older blocks.
